The hive as a superorganism

The hive as a superorganism is a scientific concept that describes the bee colony as a single living entity. It's not just thousands of insects living together in the same space: each bee performs a function essential to the collective well-being, like the cells of a body.

The queen, workers, and drones collaborate through a complex system of chemical and behavioral communication. Pheromones regulate balance, hierarchies, and daily activities. Internal temperature is also collectively controlled: the bees ventilate or huddle together to maintain the temperature necessary for the brood's survival.

In a superorganism, individualism does not exist. If a bee sacrifices itself to defend the hive, it does so to ensure the genetic continuity of the colony. This cooperative model represents one of the most extraordinary examples of natural organization.

Understanding the hive as a superorganism helps us understand how delicate its internal balance is and how important it is to protect it from pesticides, parasites, and climate change.
