The Drone: The Role of the Male in the Hive
Share
The drone is the colony's male bee. Its main task is to fertilize a virgin queen during her mating flight. Unlike worker bees, it lacks a stinger and is not involved in nectar collection or honey production.
Drones hatch from unfertilized eggs and are more robust in build. After mating, the drone dies. If it fails to fertilize a queen, it is removed from the hive at the end of the breeding season, when resources must be conserved for the winter.
Although their role seems limited, drones are essential to ensuring genetic diversity and continuity of the species.
The balanced presence of drones contributes to the overall health of the apiary and the stability of bee populations.
